Want to inspire confidence and build credibility? Choose your words wisely.

It’s important to demonstrate confidence when you’re trying to build credibility or influence others. In addition to posture, eye contact, intonation, and preparedness, another simple way to demonstrate confidence and build credibility is to pay close attention to the words you use.

Check out the following 3 examples of where a minimal shift in words can generate a subtle, yet notable, difference when seeking results:

You might say: “I think this is a great idea for our team.”
Stronger alternative: “I’m confident that implementing this idea will generate great outcomes for our team.”

You might say: “I’d like to get your input as I’m making this decision.”
Stronger alternative: “Based on the data I’ve seen, I’m confident about the decision I would recommend. Before I do that, can you offer any additional information that might have an impact on the final decision?”

You might say: “I’m not sure how to go about this, but I gave it my best shot anyway.”
Stronger alternative: I’ll share an idea that I believe will work well and I’m looking forward to getting your input based on your in-depth experience.

Our level of confidence is demonstrated by our physical, emotional and verbal messages. If you’re looking to inspire confidence and build credibility, this simple approach may well add to your efforts.
